Among the newest options for health insurance are the recently introduced health savings accounts. Health savings accounts involve a high deductible health plan, which allow an individual or employer to establish a tax-deferred savings account. This account can be used to pay deductible and other qualified expenses on a tax-free basis. The savings account can earn interest and unused money can be carried over from year to year. At age 65, an individual can withdraw the savings as ordinary income not subject to a penalty.
With the possible exception of annual check-ups, all covered medical expenses, including prescriptions, are subject to the deductible.
